چکیده

We compare and contrast the low-temperature magnetotransport properties of ultrathin, insulating Be films with and without spin-orbit scattering SOS . Beryllium films have very little intrinsic SOS, but by “dusting” them with submonolayer coverages of Au, one can introduce a well-controlled SOS rate. Pure Be films with sheet resistance R RQ exhibit a low-temperature negative magnetoresistance MR that saturates to the quantum resistance RQ=h /e2. This high-field quantum metal phase is believed to represent a different ground state of the system. In contrast, the corresponding negative MR in Be/Au films is greatly diminished, suggesting that, in the presence of strong SOS, the quantum metal phase can only be reached at field scales well beyond those typically available in a low-temperature laboratory.

Field-induced spin mixing in ultrathin superconducting Al and be films in high parallel magnetic fields.

We report spin-dependent electron density of states (DOS) studies of ultrathin superconducting Al and Be films in high parallel magnetic fields. Superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunneling spectra are presented in which both the film and the counterelectrode are in the paramagnetic limit. This SIS configuration is exquisitely sensitive to spin mixing and/or spin flip processes which...

Role of spin-orbit coupling and hybridization effects in the electronic structure of ultrathin Bi films.

The electronic structure of Bi(001) ultrathin films (thickness > or =7 bilayers) on Si(111)-7x7 was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. In contrast with the semimetallic nature of bulk Bi, both the experiment and theory demonstrate the metallic character of the films with the Fermi surface formed by spin-orbit-split surface states (SSs) showin...

Ultrathin two-dimensional superconductivity with strong spin-orbit coupling.

We report on a study of epitaxially grown ultrathin Pb films that are only a few atoms thick and have parallel critical magnetic fields much higher than the expected limit set by the interaction of electron spins with a magnetic field, that is, the Clogston-Chandrasekhar limit. The epitaxial thin films are classified as dirty-limit superconductors because their mean-free paths, which are limite...

Quantum Interference Control of Ballistic Magneto- resistance in a Magnetic Nanowire Containing Two Atomic- Size Domain Walls

The magnetoresistance of a one-dimensional electron gas in a metallic ferromagnetic nanowire containing two atomic-size domain walls has been investigated in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. The magnetoresistance is calculated in the ballistic regime, within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. It has been demonstrated that the conductance of a magnetic nanowire with double domain walls...

Abstract Submitted for the MAR13 Meeting of The American Physical Society Spin-orbit scattering in quantum diffusion of massive Dirac fermions

Submitted for the MAR13 Meeting of The American Physical Society Spin-orbit scattering in quantum diffusion of massive Dirac fermions WENYU SHAN, Wean Hall 6424, Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh — We theoretically study the effects of spin-orbit scattering on weak (anti-)localization in two-dimensional massive Dirac systems. We clarify that weak anti-localization and loca...
